In 1680, Captain Florentia O’Sullivan was granted the land area now known as Sullivan’s Island and the Old Village of Mt. Pleasant. Settlers fended off French and Spanish attacks and became prosperous through shipbuilding business, mechanical rice cultivation, and agricultural farming. During the Revolutionary War, British troops tried to capture Charleston in 1776, but under the leadership of Colonel William Moultrie, the patriots were able to stop the British troops, thus re-energizing America’s spirit. After this significant victory, the fort became rightfully known as Fort Moultrie and is one of the oldest standing forts in our nation. Built out of palmetto logs, the fort was used in subsequent wars.
Not only was Mt. Pleasant a focal point during the Revolutionary War, but it was also a battleground during the Civil War. The first shots fired to initiate the war came from Citadel cadets at Fort Sumter. Confederate soldiers occupied the fort and, during this time, Mt. Pleasant held secret training for the Confederate submarine, the CSS H.L. Hunley, a vessel that sunk after deployment from Breach Inlet. Mt. Pleasant and Charleston surrendered to Union troops on February 26, 1865. Years later, Fort Sumter was also used during the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II. Today, visitors can can tour both the restored fort and resurrected submarine, H.L. Hunley. As folks moved back to Mt. Pleasant after the Civil War, the town experienced steady and sustainable growth. The past few decades Mt. Pleasant has become the premier place to live in Charleston County. The strong sense of community, close proximity to the beaches on Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, and its Blue Ribbon schools make it an ideal choice for families, retirees, and young adults.
Furthermore, Mt. Pleasant has a wide array of amenities, entertainment venues, and shopping establishments. Apart from its historical landmarks such as Alhambra Hall, Ft. Moultrie, Charles Pinckney House, and Boone Hall Plantation, children enjoy roaming progressive parks like Memorial Waterfront Park and jumping at Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline complex. Other recreational activities include paddle boarding down Shem Creek; fishing off the Mt. Pleasant Pier; biking trails in the Francis Marion Forest; golfing at Charleston National, Patriot’s Point, Snee Farm, or Dunes West; playing tennis in a casual club or competitive USTA league; enjoying nature at Palmetto State Park; driving race cars at Charleston Fun Park; and participating in recreational league sports such as flag football, soccer, baseball and basketball. Mt. Pleasant is well known for its athletic aptitude and the town is proud to produce numerous state championships. Though the town does not have an indoor mall, it does have numerous outdoor shopping complexes with anchor chain stores like Belk, Stein Mart, Walmart and Hobby Lobby, and southern boutiques such as Teal, Carolina Girls, Blush, and Coastal Cupboard. These include Belle Hall Shopping Center on Long Point Road, Town Center on Highway 17, Wando Crossing, and The Market at Oakland in North Mt. Pleasant. Additionally, many large neighborhoods have their own shopping plaza as well, allowing residents to walk, bike, or take their golf cart to the grocery store, bakery, bagel shop, or nail salon. These commercial complexes are found at Seaside Farms, I’on, Park West, Carolina Park, Rivertowne, and Charleston National.
Residents of Mt. Pleasant need not cross the Ravenel Bridge to find delicious diners and trendy bars. With more than 150 restaurants (and growing) in town, families are certain to appease their appetite at local favorites like Tavern and Table, The Red Drum, Graze, Page’s Okra Grill, and Melvin’s BBQ to name a few. After dinner, adults continue to mix and mingle at traditional and hip bars like The Crafty Draught, Locals Bar, King Street Bar and Grille, and Art's Bar and Grill, an iconic - albeit unpretentious - pub where Darius Rucker recently popped in for Karaoke night.
From its rural suburban start to its present day popularity, Mt. Pleasant real estate is Charleston’s most active market. Homes for sale in Mt.
